Orlando Pirates secured their fourth straight MTN8 title on Saturday evening, defeating Stellenbosch FC 3-0 in a commanding performance at Mbombela Stadium.
Pirates made several changes from their last Premier Soccer League match against Chippa United. Patrick Maswanganyi and Oswin Appollis were replaced by Relebohile Mofokeng and Sipho Mbule, while Genino Palace, Sanele Barns, and Lehlohonolo Mojela were recalled to the starting lineup.
The Buccaneers came out firing, pinning Stellenbosch back in the opening minutes. Mbule tested goalkeeper Sage Stephens with a series of powerful long-range efforts, forcing several sharp saves in the opening stages. Despite sustained pressure, the first half ended goalless, with neither side able to create clear-cut chances.
The deadlock was finally broken in extra time. Tshepang Moremi struck in the 91st minute following a clever assist from substitute Oswin Appollis, giving Pirates a well-deserved lead.
Tshegofatso John Mabasa doubled the advantage in the 102nd minute, further unsettling the visitors. The home side sealed the win in the 109th minute as Moremi netted his second goal, completing a decisive 3-0 scoreline.
Stellenbosch responded with tactical changes, including the introduction of Langelihle Phili, in a bid to regain control, but they struggled to contain Pirates’ momentum.
Frustration boiled over in the 116th minute when Andre de Jong received a yellow card, underlining Stellenbosch’s mounting despair.
This emphatic win not only secures a historic fourth consecutive MTN8 triumph for Orlando Pirates but also delivers a significant morale boost ahead of their upcoming league fixtures.
