JOHANNESBURG – The Chemical Energy Paper Printing Wood and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU) will embark on a strike from Thursday, 28 July, after a breakdown in wage talks.
According to the Fuel Retailer Association chief executive officer, Reggie Sibiya, the strike will affect refineries, depots and insourced truck workers.
More than 15,000 employees are expected to down tools.
The strike is reportedly not part of forecourt staff negotiations with the Motor Industry Bargaining Council, meaning that attendants at petrol stations will still be at work.
CEPPWAWU spokesperson Clement Chitja said the strike was a result of a breakdown in wage negotiations with employers.
The union is reportedly asking for a pay increase of 9%; two percentage points below what the company is prepared to offer.
Workers are also demanding collective bargaining rights and for temporary staff to become permanent after a three-month probation period.
Chitja said the union wants wage agreements to apply to all workers and for regulation agreements to be made regarding rotational shift systems.
