Paul van Zuydam
A South African-born billionaire businessman and owner and chairman of the iconic French cookware enterprise Le Creuset.
Biography
Raised as one of seven children on a South African farm, Paul van Zuydam’s early life was shaped by frugality, discipline, and resourcefulness. He left South Africa as a young man to build a career in global consumer goods, working across North America, Europe, and the United Kingdom. By the mid-1980s, he had risen to become Chairman and CEO of Prestige Group, a UK-listed homeware manufacturer of kitchen tools and stainless steel cookware.
In 1987, van Zuydam learned that Le Creuset—the historic French enameled cast-iron foundry in Fresnoy-le-Grand established in 1925—was struggling with severe debt and operational inefficiencies. Upon inspecting the factory, he recognized the unique value of its artisanal hand-poured manufacturing process and color heritage. When Prestige’s planned acquisition of Le Creuset fell through following Prestige's own corporate takeover by an American conglomerate, van Zuydam resigned from his executive position and personally acquired Le Creuset in 1988 with approval from the French government.
Over nearly four decades of private ownership, van Zuydam transformed Le Creuset from a localized French foundry into a global luxury kitchenware powerhouse. He modernized production facilities, expanded product lines beyond cast iron into stoneware, silicone, and stainless steel, and established a direct-to-consumer retail footprint across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Operating with extreme privacy from Switzerland, van Zuydam turned the brand into a cultural icon and a multi-billion-dollar enterprise.
