Koos Bekker

Non-Executive Chairman & Investor, Naspers / Prosus / Babylonstoren

Jacobus Petrus "Koos" Bekker is best known for transforming the former local publishing house into a global tech investment power house

Biography

Born in Potchefstroom, Koos Bekker attended Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg before pursuing a multi-disciplinary education. He completed degrees in literature and law at Stellenbosch University and an LLB at the University of the Witwatersrand, working briefly in advertising before earning an MBA at Columbia Business School in New York in 1984. While at Columbia, Bekker authored a paper on pay-television business models, which formed the strategic blueprint for his entrepreneurial career.

Upon returning to South Africa in 1985, Bekker co-founded M-Net alongside a consortium of newspaper publishers, launching one of the first pay-television services outside the United States. Expanding across Africa, he subsequently led the formation of MultiChoice (pay TV) and played a pivotal founding role in cellular operator MTN in 1994. In 1997, Bekker was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Naspers. During his 17-year tenure as CEO, he transformed Naspers from a traditional regional print publisher into a global consumer internet and media giant. His defining achievement came in 2001 when he authorized a $32 million investment for a 46.5% stake in Chinese internet startup Tencent—a move widely recognized as one of the most lucrative venture capital investments in financial history.

Bekker famously received no base salary, bonus, or pension as CEO of Naspers, accepting compensation exclusively in stock options, aligning his wealth directly with long-term shareholder value. After stepping down as CEO in 2014, he assumed the role of Non-Executive Chairman in 2015. Alongside his corporate legacy, Bekker and his wife, Karen Roos, established Babylonstoren, a celebrated historic Cape Dutch farm, winery, and luxury hotel in the Franschhoek valley.
