Abdulsamad Rabiu
A Nigerian billionaire industrialist, philanthropist, and founder and Executive Chairman of the BUA Group.
Biography
Born in Kano in northern Nigeria, Abdul Samad Rabiu was raised in a prominent commercial family. His father, Khalifah Isyaku Rabiu, was a leading industrialist and trader in post-independence Nigeria. Rabiu attended Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, to study economics. In 1984, at age 24, he was forced to abruptly return to Nigeria to take over the management of his family’s business empire after his father was detained under the military administration of General Muhammadu Buhari over import duty allegations.
Building upon his operational experience, Rabiu branched out in 1988 to establish BUA International Limited as a standalone commodity trading enterprise, importing agricultural goods, rice, flour, edible oil, and steel products. In 1990, he secured a major contract with state-owned Delta Steel Company to supply raw materials in exchange for finished steel billets, accelerating the company’s expansion. Driven by an import-substitution strategy, Rabiu pivoted BUA from trading into heavy manufacturing. In 2008, he commissioned Sub-Saharan Africa’s second-largest sugar refinery in Lagos, successfully breaking an eight-year domestic sugar monopoly.
Rabiu subsequently built BUA Group into a multi-sector industrial titan. He entered heavy building materials by acquiring CCECC Northern Cement and constructing a $900 million modern plant in Edo State, eventually merging his cement assets into BUA Cement PLC. He consolidated his food businesses into BUA Foods PLC, listing both companies on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) to create two of Nigeria’s most capitalized publicly listed entities. Through the Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR Africa), launched in 2021 with a $100 million annual pledge, Rabiu has positioned himself among Africa’s most prominent social impact investors, focusing on healthcare, education, and regional development.
