The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has appointed prominent South African law firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH) to investigate serious allegations against the party’s deputy president, Kenny Kunene.

The decision follows claims linking Kunene to an alleged criminal network reportedly headed by Katiso “KT” Molefe, who has been accused of orchestrating the 2022 murder of popular musician DJ Sumbody.

In response, Kunene has resigned from all public positions and been suspended from political activities within the party pending the outcome of the probe.

Selection of the Law Firm

According to PA leader Gayton McKenzie, the party conducted a thorough vetting process before selecting CDH. Several law firms were reviewed, but some were excluded due to prior business ties with the party’s companies. CDH was ultimately chosen to ensure the investigation is conducted with independence, transparency, and credibility.

Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr is regarded as one of South Africa’s leading legal firms, with extensive expertise in corporate governance, regulatory investigations, and litigation. Its appointment signals the PA’s intention to subject the matter to rigorous scrutiny and independent oversight.

Focus of the Investigation

Although the detailed terms of reference have not been disclosed, the inquiry will centre on Kunene’s possible connections to criminal activities, his awareness of any illicit dealings, and the potential implications for his political role.

The contract with CDH is expected to be finalised imminently, with the investigation set to begin immediately.

The PA has pledged to release the findings once the investigation is concluded, underlining its commitment to transparency and integrity.

Maintaining Public Trust

Party leadership has framed the move as part of a broader effort to safeguard the PA’s credibility and demonstrate accountability. Kunene is reportedly cooperating fully with the process and has expressed support for the independent probe.

Next Steps

The investigation is expected to be completed within weeks. Its findings could determine Kunene’s political future and influence the PA’s position ahead of upcoming municipal by-elections and coalition talks.

Analysts suggest the process could serve as a benchmark for internal accountability within South African politics, depending on its execution and transparency.
