Tuesday marks the 63rd anniversary of adoption of the Freedom Charter as the country reflects on its principles. And to mark the event, two original copies of the Charter have been officially authenticated.
These are the only remaining copies since the charter was adopted on 26th June 1955 in Kliptown, Soweto.
The Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa officially handed over Certificates of Authentication of the Freedom Charter to the National Archives and Records Services of South Africa (NARSSA) and Liliesleaf Trust at the Liliesleaf Heritage Site, Rivonia in Sandton.
The event forms part of the celebrations of the listing and registration of the Freedom Charter in the NARSSA legislation. Mthethwa says this event is very important to South African.
“The direction RSA has been taking since 1955, if you look at the Constitution of SA you can see the perspective of the Freedom Charter is engrained. We have two authentic documents that we can further canvas Enesco. For us it’s a beautiful day one for the essence of the freedom charter itself and as we reflect on the road traversed from 63-years ago and what we have now is something we are going to be proud of.”
