Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba has confirmed the death of one of the conjoined twin boys who were separated in a complex surgery at Mankweng Hospital.
The infant passed away due to organ failure, following weeks of medical care after the procedure.
COMPLEX SURGERY MARKED MILESTONE
The twins, born in late January and joined at the abdomen, underwent a delicate separation operation in March. The procedure was led by Professor Nyaweleni Tshifularo and lasted around eight hours.
At the time, the surgery was described as a major milestone for healthcare in the province.
COMPLICATIONS AFTER SURGERY
According to Ramathuba, concerns arose days after the operation when one of the babies began showing signs of infection. The condition later developed into multiple organ failure.
Despite efforts by the medical team to stabilise the infant, the baby did not survive.
PREMIER EXPRESSES SADNESS
Ramathuba described the loss as deeply painful, noting that there had been hope for both children to recover and grow.
Medical teams continue to monitor the surviving twin, as post-surgical complications remain a risk during the early recovery period.
