POTCHEFSTROOM – The North West University has obtained a high court order prohibiting the disruption of activities at its Potchefstroom campus.
That is as classes remain suspended at its Mahikeng campus.
Suspended EFF SRC president Benz Mabengwane vowed to bring war to the institution by holding a mass demonstration at the Potchefstroom campus on Monday.
This follows clashes between Mahikeng university students and campus security last week.
Reports suggest students were protesting against an unusual situation in which a Student Representative Council (SRC), handpicked by management, was being inaugurated.
A standoff between protesters and the officers called in to disperse them, culminated in a number of buildings being torched.
A video sent to eNCA shows stun grenades and rubber bullets being used to disperse students.
The university has denied claims that live ammunition was used.
“During these clashes security fired rubber bullets and used teargas to normalise the situation. There were also a few students that were injured during these clashes,” the university said at the time.
“The allegations that security used life ammunition and that a student has been killed are totally untrue and unfounded.”
