As some universities have officially concluded their registration period, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is scheduled to give a brief update on the status of affairs in the higher education sector.
Information regarding registrations, allowance payments, and lodging will be given by the funding scheme in a media briefing.
Higher education institutions have had a relatively peaceful registration period this year as compared to the previous years, with fewer protests around the country over funding issues.
In order to guarantee that students meet the registration deadline, NSFAS gave universities and colleges more than R3 billion to cover the cost of registration and allowances for the first month of the academic year.
Lourens van Staden, the scheme’s acting board chair, will be giving his first briefing following board chair Ernest Khosa’s leave of absence due to alleged charges of corruption.
The troubled funding aid scheme previously faced criticism for its inefficiency in disbursing student allowances when the 2023 academic year concluded.
