Mpumalanga police have arrested several suspects in a series of operations aimed at tackling illegal mining and undocumented immigration. The arrests, which took place over the weekend and earlier this week, fall under Operation Vala Umgodi, a campaign designed to combat illicit mining activities that endanger communities, heritage sites and the environment.

Pilgrims Rest Raid Nets Seven Suspects

On Saturday, 20 September 2025, a joint police task team raided Pilgrims Rest, a historic gold mining town turned heritage site. Seven suspects aged between 15 and 43 were taken into custody. Six of them were undocumented foreign nationals, while another individual was fined for employing illegal immigrants.

During the operation, police discovered and confiscated abandoned mining equipment, including stamping mills, motors, gas and oxygen cylinders and wheelbarrows. Authorities say illegal mining in the area has polluted rivers, destabilised old shafts and undermined tourism, a crucial source of income for local residents.

Six Suspects Remain Behind Bars

The six undocumented suspects, identified as Bongani Botsie Mlilo, Nation Mlambo, Fabion Mahlaba, Simao Mashaba, Caiphus Mahlalela and Makhosemvelo Moyo, appeared in the Graskop Magistrates Court this week. They were remanded in custody until 1 October 2025 as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal mining networks operating in the province.

N4 Roadblock Leads to More Arrests
In a separate incident on Monday, 22 September 2025, police arrested three men aged between 29 and 36 during a stop and search near the Middelburg Toll Plaza on the N4. All were undocumented and are scheduled to appear before the Emalahleni Magistrates Court. Detectives are working closely with the Department of Home Affairs to verify their immigration status and investigate possible ties to illegal mining syndicates.

Commitment to Ongoing Action

Police say these arrests highlight the growing reach of Operation Vala Umgodi, which has intensified in response to the escalating threat posed by illegal mining. Authorities have pledged to continue operations across the province, stressing that the initiative is vital to safeguarding public safety, protecting the environment and preserving heritage towns like Pilgrims Rest.
