Motorists hoping to drive along Lilian Ngoyi Street will have to wait a little longer, as the City of Johannesburg confirmed the road will reopen on 12 September, later than the previously announced date.
While major repair work following the July 2023 underground gas explosion has been completed, authorities said additional touch-ups are still required to ensure the road is safe for public use. The blast had split the street in two, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.
Ongoing work includes paving sidewalks, removing construction equipment, painting road markings, and finishing a bus stop shelter.
The city indicated that these final tasks would be completed within the next 12 days, after which both vehicles and pedestrians will be able to access the area and businesses can fully resume operations.
So far, R82 million has been spent on restoring the street, which remains closed to traffic until the new reopening date.
