JOHANNESBURG – The number of reported cases of corruption has increased significantly in the past year, according to Corruption Watch.
The lobby group released its annual corruption report on Wednesday, and this shows 2,382 cases were registered during 2015.
Since its inception in 2012, Corruption Watch has received a total of 10,000 reports of corruption.
It says the 71-percent increase in reported instances of corruption highlights the power of public participation.
The most cases, 16%, involved schools.
Abuses of power constituted 38 percent of all corruption reports, followed by bribery at 20 percent.
Once again, Gauteng topped provincial rankings, accounting for half of all the reported cases.
But, Corruption Watch says the figure does not indicate that the province is the most corrupt in the country, but can be attributed to its enormous population and amount of financial activity compared with other regions.
