KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is awaiting authorisation from the Office of the National Commissioner to transfer funds raised through a BackaBuddy campaign into the South African Police Service Education Trust (SAPSET).
The donations were initially collected by popular X personality Chris Excel, who launched the campaign earlier this month to present Mkhwanazi with two cows as a token of appreciation. The initiative gained rapid traction online, drawing in close to R50 000 from supporters.
Instead of accepting the gift, Mkhwanazi proposed that the funds be redirected to SAPSET, which provides financial assistance for the education of children whose parents lost their lives in the line of duty. Since its inception in 2010, the trust has supported more than 1,000 bereaved children with school and university fees.
The commissioner acknowledged the generosity of those who contributed, noting the vital role public support plays in improving the lives of police officers’ families.
