A Kenyan opposition politician which government authorities deported despite a court order, now says he was assaulted, drugged and then forcefully dragged onto a Dubai bound flight on Wednesday evening.
This is his second deportation and it comes after a two day detention at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.
Miguna Miguna was present at the mock swearing in of opposition leader Raila Odinga, he faced treason charges in February and authorities deported in the same month saying he had rescinded his Kenyan citizenship when he acquired Canadian nationality but a court ruled he should be allowed back.
On Monday, Miguna returned to Kenya using his Canadian passport but when he reached the airport, he was denied entry into the country after he refused to produce the Canadian passport indicating the he is a Kenyan.
He was forced into an Emirates flight to Dubai but he was offloaded after he protested his forceful removal. On Wednesday a high judge found senior government officials in contempt of court for failing to release Miguna.
Odinga ordered the interior security minster Dr. Fred Matiang’i, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and immigration Chief Gordon Kihalangw’a to appear in court for sentencing.
The deportation lays bare the standoff between the judiciary and the executive.
