SuperSport United will lock horns with Maritzburg United on Wednesday night, and they go into the match on the back of a thrilling 2-1 victory over ASSM Elgeco Plus, which signalled progression into the next round of the Caf Confederation Cup.

Defender Tefu Mashamaite has praised the efforts of Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns over the years, and he strongly believes that they have opened the doors for other South African clubs to do well on the continent.

“A few years ago it used to be just two teams. Then Pirates and Sundowns did well and they created chances for other South African teams. Now we have four teams participating on the continent. We have to respect Pirates and Sundowns for working so hard to create this opportunity. It’s about inculcating that importance of African competitions. All the teams are through, so let’s keep going,” Mashamaite told The Sowetan.

The 32-year-old said despite the challenges that lie ahead, the Tshwane-outfit has the quality and the mentality to do well on the continent.

“We do have the quality in our team [to reach the group stages]. We just have to believe in ourselves. We know the conditions outside of South Africa are hostile. So, we have to be strong mentally,” Mashamaite said.

SuperSport have the honour of competing on various fronts this season which includes the Premier Soccer League(PSL) title.

However, a poor performance against Free State Stars and their exploits on the continent have seen them fall down the pecking order, but Mashamaite is unfazed.

“It’s not a two-horse race, the difference from number one to number five is so little that you just have to be consistent,” he added.

“We as SuperSport are not looking at others. We are running our own race and focusing on the finish line,” Mashamaite concluded.
