JOHANNESBURG – A 32-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempted rape and attempted murder in the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.
Spokesperson Captain Nkosikho Mzuku said Batandwa Calata attempted to rape a 35-year-old woman in the bushes at Msintsini location near Berlin in November 2015.
“He further stabbed her in the chest, during the process. The victim survived this traumatic ordeal and managed to escape,” Mzuku said.
“A case of attempted rape and attempted murder was opened at Berlin police station. Thorough investigation by Warrant Officer Zonwabele Singeni, led to the immediate arrest of the suspect.”
Mzuku said Calata was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for attempted murder and five years imprisonment for attempted rape.
