The embattled African National Congress (ANC) mayor of the Mahikeng Local Municipality in North West, Betty Diakanyo, has survived a motion of no-confidence after councillors who were debating the motion walked out.
This is the second time that chaos erupted before the councillors could vote on the motion.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) initially tabled the motion last week.
Councillors want to remove the mayor after the suspension of the municipal manager who unilaterally invested over R80-million in the embattled Venda Mutual Bank (VBS).
The municipality has since been placed under administration following months of allegations of corruption and maladministration.
DA caucus leader, Willie Bohma, who tabled the motion says “We came here before anything and he said he made a ruling and the motion is falling off. He walks in and he does not allow us to talk, so what must we do? We let him have his meeting as the ANC rule corruptly. From here we go for the motion against the speaker because he cannot even hold his own house.”
