JOHANNESBURG – Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has described as “brave” and “magnanimous” the dramatic concessions President Jacob Zuma made in the Constitutional Court during the Nkandla hearing on Tuesday.
Zuma has now conceded that remedial action ordered by the Public Protector is binding and must not be second-guessed or ignored.
Madonsela says it was “awesome” to sit inside the Constitutional Court and listen to all the arguments.
Despite two years of disputes, insults and parallel investigations she has praised the president for his approach.
“I think it’s a good thing to embrace the truth.”
Madonsela says while the “broad strokes” of her powers are now no longer in question, the Constitutional Court must still rule on what Parliament can and cannot do.
“Yesterday was possibly a game changer in terms of the understanding that we are not a parliamentary democracy, we’re a constitutional democracy.”
Judgment in the Nkandla matter has been reserved.
