Acting President David Mabuza has sent his condolences to the families of the eight people killed in an explosion at the Rheinmettal Denel munitions plant near Somerset West in the Western Cape on Monday.
The explosion occurred during operations at the explosives manufacturing factory.
Details on what caused the blast at the national key point are not yet clear.
Presidency spokesperson Thami Ngwenya says Mabuza has called on authorities to launch a full investigation into the blast.
He says: “Deputy President Mabuza in his acting capacity as President has expressed his sadness on this unfortunate incident where eight people lost their lives. On behalf of the government and the country, he expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those who are injured a speedy recovery.”
“He has also urged the authorities to get to the bottom of the cause of this explosion so necessary action can be taken.”
