JOHANNESBURG – #UnitedBehind lodged a complaint that Peters neglected her duties as transport minister by failing to appoint a Group CEO at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).
Additionally, Peters used Prasa buses for African National Congress (ANC) events between 2014 and 2015, and the ruling party did not pay for the use of buses.
Peters removed the Prasa board, chaired by Popo Molefe, after it uncovered irregular expenditure of R14 billion and began investigations. It was found that this was the reason for the board’s removal.
In January, Peters went to the Western Cape High Court to prevent parliament from implementing the ethics committee’s findings. However, her application was rejected.
On Friday, Ramaphosa suspended Peters for a month.
Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, stated that this decision was made following a sanction adopted by parliament’s Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests against the deputy minister.
The committee found that Peters breached the Code of Ethical Conduct during her tenure as Minister of Transport. As a result, Peters has been sanctioned and suspended for one term.
The suspension began on February 28th and will end on March 28th.
