Violet Mathye, Limpopo’s MEC for Transport and Community Safety, says human error is to blame for three major road accidents recorded during the Easter period.
At least five people have lost their lives in crashes along the N1 between Modimolle and Mokopane earlier this week.
EASTER TRAVEL SPIKE RAISES CONCERNS
The incidents come as thousands of members of the Zion Christian Church travel to Moria near Polokwane for Easter celebrations, significantly increasing traffic volumes on major routes.
Mathye addressed the media on Friday at the Kranskop Toll Plaza during a road safety campaign aimed at reducing accidents over the busy holiday period.
SAFETY MEASURES IMPLEMENTED
The provincial department has partnered with Putco to assist in transporting some churchgoers safely.
Authorities say their goal is to minimise further accidents and fatalities on the roads as Easter travel continues, with hopes that post-holiday statistics will reflect improved road safety outcomes.
