The conflict between Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and the Democratic Alliance (DA) has escalated as Lesufi launched a new attack on the party.
Lesufi took to his X account, which he briefly deactivated before reactivating, to post a lengthy message criticising the DA.
He accused the party of running a “relentless and desperate” effort to unseat him as Premier of Gauteng and destabilise the province.
Lesufi attributed the DA’s exclusion from Gauteng’s Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) as the reason behind their smear campaign.
Talks between the DA and the African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng collapsed after the ANC lost its majority in the 2024 general elections.
Lesufi believes the DA is resentful after being shut out from participating in the provincial government.
“The DA was given an opportunity to participate in the GPU but chose not to. Instead they threw at us what we deemed as unreasonable demands that we could not accept. Now they are running a campaign to paint me as a corrupt, irrational ANC rogue,” Lesufi stated.
It was also reported that the ANC recently called on Lesufi to appear before its Integrity Commission.
Additionally, the party’s secretary general, Fikile Mbalula, accused Lesufi of publicly opposing the Government of National Unity (GNU).
