Johannesburg Water has scheduled a major water outage that will impact several central areas for more than two days. The shutdown will take place from 12:00 on Friday, 14 November, until 16:00 on Sunday, 16 November, affecting suburbs including the Johannesburg CBD, Newtown, Selby, Jeppestown, and Doornfontein. During this period, residents can expect low water pressure or no supply at all.

The interruption is part of ongoing maintenance work to install new valves at the bypass chamber and pump station, as well as to complete essential tie-ins. The utility said these upgrades form part of its broader effort to improve water service reliability and strengthen the city’s infrastructure.

Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to store sufficient water in advance and use it sparingly until the system is fully restored.

Focus on long-term improvement

Johannesburg Water said the upgrades are designed to enhance service delivery, ensure a more stable water supply, and reduce water losses. The entity emphasised that such interventions are part of a long-term strategy to provide consistent and sustainable water services across all regions of the city.

City pushes for faster service delivery

Speaking at a briefing in Braamfontein on Tuesday, City of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero said the municipality was addressing both urgent and long-standing service delivery challenges. He noted that the city was working closely with its entities to ensure faster responses to community concerns.

Morero highlighted recent interventions in Eldorado Park and Homestead Park as examples of this renewed approach. In Eldorado Park, the city resolved a persistent sewage issue that had affected residents for seven years, while in Homestead Park, a public space previously occupied by vagrants was cleared and revitalised for community use.

The mayor said these swift responses reflect the city’s commitment to accountability and efficiency in service delivery, ensuring that residents do not have to wait years for basic infrastructure issues to be resolved.
