The City of Johannesburg has pledged to conduct inspections at every construction site across the metro following a deadly building collapse that claimed nine lives.

City officials said the tragedy has exposed serious compliance concerns within the construction sector. In response, developers found to be in violation of regulations will face strict consequences, including being blacklisted and criminally charged where necessary.

Comprehensive Site Audits

City Manager Floyd Brink confirmed that authorities will begin with a full audit of all developments currently under construction. The process will involve reviewing and verifying building plans, approvals and related documentation to ensure compliance with municipal bylaws and safety standards.

The aim, Brink said, is to protect residents and prevent similar disasters in future. He stressed that bylaws will be enforced without exception.

Calls For Crisis Management

On Tuesday, Minister of Public Works Dean Macpherson visited the collapse site, acknowledging that the incident highlights the urgent need for improved crisis management and oversight within the sector.

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero also conceded that the City has faced challenges in monitoring construction activity. He noted that while resources are limited, the municipality must ensure that available capacity is used effectively to carry out inspections and enforcement duties.

The City has indicated that it is prioritising tighter oversight as part of broader efforts to restore public confidence and strengthen safety compliance across Johannesburg’s construction industry.
