Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia says the investigation into the alleged assassination attempt on Deputy President Paul Mashatile has been completed, but the findings remain classified.

The probe followed a March incident in which Mashatile’s convoy came under fire while returning from an African National Congress national executive committee meeting in Johannesburg.

His official vehicle was struck on the windscreen, which appeared to have been hit by a bullet, although Mashatile was not injured.

Responding to a parliamentary question from the Economic Freedom Fighters, Cachalia confirmed that both the police’s Crime Intelligence division and the State Security Agency had concluded their enquiry.

He added that progress on the matter would be reported once the findings had been finalised and after their classification status was determined.

Mashatile’s spokesperson, Keith Khoza, said at the time that the shooting occurred along the N12 highway near Boksburg, when one of the vehicles in the convoy was targeted.

Police immediately opened an investigation, with early suspicions pointing to an assassination attempt.

The details of the findings are expected to shed light on the circumstances of the attack, though it is unclear when the report will be made public.
