Taxi commuters in Cape Town are set to be forced to find alternative arrangements Monday morning as some taxi operators are to embark on a strike in the province.
The local taxi associations are involved in a dispute with the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) on various issues.
These include the impact of the high fuel price and route invasions.
In a joint statement by taxi associations CATA and Codeta, they say their demands have not been replied to by government and they have been left with no choice but to withdraw their services.
The Western Cape Ministry of Transport says this is the same group that organised a taxi strike last year that resulted in injuries to innocent commuters and millions of rands of damage to property, including the burning of three buses and several private vehicles.
Meanwhile the Mayoral Committee Member for Transport in the City of Cape Town, Brett Herron says MyCiti services could also be affected as many of their drivers use taxis to get to work.
