The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has temporarily halted the planned final analogue switch-off, which was set to take place at the end of March. The court has interdicted Communications Minister Solly Malatsi from proceeding with the switch-off until a review application has been finalised.
The ruling follows an application brought by eTV, Media Monitoring Africa, and the SOS Support Public Broadcasting Coalition, who argued that the decision lacked proper consultation with industry stakeholders.
Presiding over the case, Judge Selby Baqwa found that Malatsi had failed to engage stakeholders and did not seek input from the industry regarding the feasibility of the deadline. As a result, the court deemed the implementation process procedurally flawed, leading to the suspension of the switch-off.
