JOHANNESBURG – A lawyer representing the Gupta family has repeated calls for the Public Protector’s office to include statements from the family in the state capture report.
Gert van der Merwe says that to date, there have been no attempts by the office to make contact with brothers Ajay and Atul Gupta, despite the serious allegations made against them.
The family is also facing a battle with major banks who closed their business accounts earlier this year.
Van der Merwe says while the Guptas have denied allegations of state capture made against them, they haven’t been given an opportunity to clear their name.
“I insist the report should incorporate my clients’ view. They are the people reported to be the culprits, but they’ve never been afforded the opportunity to respond.”
The family has sought assistance from Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, who is seeking a declaratory order to show that he can’t assist them
