JOHANNESBURG – Despite a report published in the Sunday Times newspaper, the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authorities (NPA) have dismissed claims that the arrest of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is imminent.
The 15 May report claimed the Hawks had delivered a docket to prosecutors. It also suggested that Gordhan could be charged with espionage.
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi dismissed the claims, saying the matter was “still under investigation”.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has also denied news of Gorhan’s arrest.
The presidency strongly rubbished the report in a statement issued on Sunday and called the story a fabrication, meant to cause confusion and mayhem.
“The Presidency… also noted the response of law enforcement agencies which have swiftly denied the rumour. It is clear therefore that the story is the work of dangerous information peddlers who wish to cause confusion and mayhem in the country,” the statement said.
Both the NPA and the Hawks are investigating claims of a rogue spy unit at the Revenue Service.
Gordhan was the SARS commissioner, when the unit was allegedly created.
