The goal came after Georgia attacked Portugal on the break upon regaining possession, setting the tone for the remainder of the night.
The underdogs did not require dominance and made the most of their opportunities, with Georges Mikautadze converting a second-half penalty to drive them to their surprise victory.
Georgia were prepared to let Portugal control possession since they were solid in defence and closed off space to minimise Portugal’s chances, while they waited for an opportunity to put pressure on the counterattack.
Georgia had few opportunities and Portugal had few meaningful threats. The underdogs held their form flawlessly and made the Group F winners increasingly frustrated.
Cristiano Ronaldo lacked the service to make a difference in the final third while the Portuguese midfielders struggled to move the ball in a way that did more than just increase possession stats.
According to FIFA rankings, Georgia produced the biggest Euros shocker in history by defeating Portugal and creating a memorable night in their the first major tournament. They will now play Spain in the final 16, while Portugal will face Slovenia.
Georgia had the least possession of any team in Euro qualifying, but managed to get the job done. They lacked possession against Portugal but accomplished what was necessary to advance in style.
