Geely’s R3,999 Coolray offer puts more than price in play
JOHANNESBURG — A turbocharged compact SUV from R3,999 a month is a proposition that invites a closer look. Geely is advertising precisely that for its Coolray in South Africa, pairing a starting purchase price of R369,900 with a finance offer that lowers the monthly entry point through a deposit and a substantial guaranteed future value.
The appeal extends beyond the instalment. The Coolray brings a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, an automatic transmission and a sizeable digital display into a price bracket where buyers scrutinise every addition to the specification sheet. For motorists considering a move into a new crossover, it presents a combination of performance, equipment and price worth examining rather than dismissing as another launch promise.
Geely’s national website currently advertises the R3,999 offer over 24 months, with a 4% deposit and a 78% guaranteed future value through Geely Finance. Road charges are excluded and terms apply. These conditions differ from earlier promotions carrying the same monthly figure, making the current written quotation important when comparing deals.
Guaranteed future value financing gives buyers a lower monthly payment by leaving a significant value to be dealt with at the end of the agreement. WesBank explains that customers can generally replace the vehicle, settle the outstanding amount to retain it, or return it subject to the agreement’s mileage and condition requirements. The attraction is access to a new vehicle at a manageable instalment, with the final ownership decision built into the contract.
Buyers should therefore compare the deposit, permitted mileage, fees and end-of-term options alongside the advertised payment. Insurance and fuel also need space in the household budget. A personalised quotation will establish what the arrangement costs for an individual applicant and what obligations remain when the 24 months end.
The three-model range starts with the Nova at R369,900, followed by the Vanguard at R399,900 and the Vertex at R429,900. Geely quotes engine outputs of 128kW and 290Nm, with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Its claimed 0–100km/h time is 7.6 seconds and combined fuel consumption is 6.5 litres per 100km; those are manufacturer figures awaiting our own assessment.
The Nova’s equipment includes a 14.6-inch infotainment screen, digital instruments, cruise control, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. Moving up to the Vanguard adds equipment including curtain airbags and a panoramic camera system. The Vertex brings features such as a panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, wireless charging and additional driver assistance systems. Buyers should match the advertised equipment to the derivative they are purchasing.
Ownership cover includes a five-year/150,000km vehicle warranty, a five-year/50,000km service plan and five years of roadside assistance with unlimited mileage, subject to terms. These provisions help frame the purchase proposition, although everyday running costs and the quality of the ownership experience require assessment beyond the brochure.
TownPress is awaiting delivery of the Coolray for a technical review. We will examine its infotainment, smartphone connectivity, camera systems and fitted driver assistance features, alongside gearbox behaviour, ride comfort and real-world fuel consumption. The price has earned the car our attention; time behind the wheel will establish how convincingly the technology and driving experience support it.
