The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has intensified calls for parents to ensure their children are vaccinated as the province battles an ongoing measles outbreak.
A six-week vaccination campaign, which began on 4 August and runs until 12 September, aims to curb the spread of the highly contagious disease. Since January, more than 400 measles cases have been confirmed in Gauteng.
Health officials have stressed that measles can lead to severe complications if left unchecked, making widespread immunisation critical. However, progress has been hampered by low consent rates from parents and guardians.
To date, 914,112 children have received the vaccine, but many more remain unprotected because consent forms are not being signed.
The department has warned that without greater cooperation, low immunisation coverage poses a significant risk to children’s health and undermines efforts to stop the outbreak.
Parents are being urged to prioritise vaccination and to submit consent forms promptly to allow their children to be vaccinated at schools.
