JOHANNESBURG – Idols South Africa judge Gareth Cliff says he’s decided to leave the show because it’s the right time to do so.
He made the announcement in a statement posted to his Facebook page earlier on Monday.
Cliff’s relationship with Idols has been rocky after M-Net announced in January that he had been fired from the show for comments he had made on Twitter.
He had been embroiled in a heated debate around estate agent Penny Sparrow and had drawn criticism for commenting that “people really don’t understand free speech at all.”
He was fired from the show but he took M-Net to court over the decision and was reinstated with an order that M-Net pay for the legal costs.
He says he doesn’t believe in staying at a place for too long.
“It’s been 11 terrific seasons and I’ve really had had a lot of fun. The Idols crew and the other judges are like family; we all get on really well. Most of all I’ve just a good innings and I don’t believe you should stay until the after party, if the party was good enough.”
