DURBAN – A Durban community fears for the future of its youth and says rampant gang violence is escalating.
There have been a number of shootings in the Wentworth area this year as rival gangs fight for control of drug trade there.
Community leaders believe local police officers need more support to deal with the scourge.
“Wentworth is the Mecca of drugs in Durban. All the drugs come through the Durban harbour as we’ve seen and also through the trucking that comes through other parts of the continent. So it’s easily accessible, drugs are transited here and then dropped off…drugs are changing hands and they’re transferred to other areas of Merebank, Bluff and other areas,” said community activist, Desmond D’sa.
Community leaders claim there have been around 30 shootings in the Wentworth area since the beginning of the year.
According to the 2015 crime statistics, 629 drug related crimes were reported in the Wentworth area alone.
KwaZulu-Natal police have appealed to community members with information to come forward.
