| A gang member from the Northern areas of Port Elizabeth was sentenced in the Port Elizabeth Regional court on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
On 3 April 2016 at about 19:00 police received information of a suspect walking in Terblanche Street in Gelvandale with a firearm in his possession. Information was immediately followed up and the suspect was spotted. As he saw the police vehicle, he walked into a yard of one of the houses. Police noticed him throwing a firearm in the yard as he jumped over the wall of another house. Dean Conley (accused) then walked out of the yard and was arrested. A 9mm pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition was seized. The firearm was reported stolen in Mount Road in 2012. Conley was sentenced today to five years imprisonment. He is a member of the Upstand Dogs gang. Firearms are at the centre of many incidents involving serious and violent crime in the Northern areas of Port Elizabeth. Sentences such as this send out a strong message to criminals that, if found in possession of an unlicensed firearm, they will be prosecuted and face imprisonment. Every citizen has a contribution to make in the fight against crime and the SAPS urges the communities to blow the whistle on persons in possession of stolen or illegal firearms |
