Foreign Nationals Arrested in High-Impact Factory Raid
DURBAN — Deputy Minister Jomo Sibiya and eThekwini Metro officials have conducted a high impact enforcement blitz in the Hammarsdale Industrial Area, resulting in the arrest of several foreign nationals and their employers.
The multidisciplinary inspection team, led by Sibiya and Councillor Nkosenhle Madlala, targeted various industrial sites to verify compliance with national labour and immigration laws. During the operation, authorities detained 25 Lesotho nationals and two Chinese nationals who were allegedly working without valid permits.
In addition to the workers, three Chinese employers were arrested for violating immigration laws. The arrests follow directives from the Presidency to curb the demand for illegal immigration used as a source of cheap labor within the South African economy.
The operation in KwaZulu Natal forms part of a broader government strategy to conduct regular blitz inspections across various sectors. Officials stated that these interventions are necessary to ensure that local businesses adhere to fair labour practices and legal hiring requirements.
The eThekwini Metro Executive Council indicated that such multidisciplinary inspections will continue indefinitely. The focus remains on identifying businesses that bypass legal immigration frameworks to gain a competitive advantage through lower wage costs.
Public interest in these raids has grown as the government intensifies its crackdown on undocumented labor. These enforcement actions are intended to protect the integrity of the national labor market and ensure that all residents and workers are properly documented within the province.
