LETABA — A fire has affected two tourist units at Letaba Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park, where repairs are still under way after flooding earlier this year. No injuries or deaths were reported.

The fire broke out on Thursday, 24 September. South African National Parks (SANParks) said camp staff and rangers contained it before it spread. The cause remains unknown and is under investigation.

The incident raises an immediate question for visitors with bookings, but SANParks has not announced a wider closure. It said the camp shop, filling station, elephant museum and reception remain open. Its statement did not say whether guests had been booked into the affected units or whether any reservations would need to change.

The fire comes as Letaba is being restored following flood damage in January. SANParks reopened the campsite for bookings in July, while repairs to tourist accommodation continued. Earlier this month, the government reported that 25 tourism units in the camp had been restored at a cost of R19 million.

SANParks has not yet said how badly the two units were damaged, whether they were among those already restored, or whether the fire will affect the remaining repair schedule. Those details, along with the cause, will determine the practical impact on the camp’s recovery. The parks authority said it would provide an update.
