Pretoria – Residents of Nellmapius can breathe a sigh of relief after two speed humps were erected on the road that claimed the life of a 10-year-old girl after she was struck by a speeding vehicle.
Ntombi Mazorodze was on her way to school when she was hit by a speeding vehicle on busy Alwyn Street less than 500 metres from her home.The 10-year-old, who was a Grade 5 pupil at local Jan Kotlolo Primary School, died of the injuries she sustained. The driver of the grey Nissan Almera that knocked her down allegedly fled the scene.
Metro police spokesman Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the city would be conducting an assessment of the area and the street to determine how to assist the community.But on Friday, new speed humps were erected, much to the relief of residents in the area.
“It’s about time they built these humps,” said resident Thabiso Masombuka. “It does not make us happy because the life of a young child was taken before anything could be done about it.”
In a fit of rage and frustration, residents used pickaxes and shovels as they took to the busy street to build ‘speed humps’, creating two ‘humps’ in the process by digging up the tar.
Masombuka said the road had been plagued by crashes and said there had been at least 10 since January.
“We also spoke to the (nearby) schools (Jan Kotlolo and Vukuzenzele Primary Schools) to see how we can solve the problem and prevent further accidents but nothing has come out of that either,” he said.
