EASTERN CAPE – On 20 March 2023, the Serious Corruption Investigation of the Hawks, based in Queenstown, apprehended Lunga Nkrumah Sivuka (41) and charged him with fraud.
The Department of Education is alleged to have advertised an educator’s position at Corana Junior Secondary School in 2020, explicitly indicating the qualifications needed for the post. It is further alleged that the accused submitted an application for the position, claiming that he had acquired his Bachelor of Education from Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha in 2017.
An investigation established that Sivuka had failed his final examination and did not possess the qualification he had claimed to possess, leading to a monetary loss of more than R500 000 for the Department of Education due to his deceit.
On 20 March 2023, Sivuka was taken into custody at his home in Mthatha. He was then brought before the Magistrate at the Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on the same date and was eventually granted R5000 bail.
The matter is remanded to 25 April 2023 to set a trial date.
