TSHIKONDENI — More than 500 flood-affected households in Limpopo have received humanitarian assistance from Exxaro Resources, which says families around its former Tshikondeni mine were still struggling months after floods damaged homes and destroyed essential belongings.
In a statement dated 15 September, Exxaro said it provided more than R1.3 million in relief through Aga Setshaba NPC, reaching over 2,000 people. Assistance included groceries, blankets and household essentials, with vulnerable families prioritised.
Traditional leaders, community stakeholders and the Department of Social Development helped identify beneficiaries. Priority groups included elderly people, persons with disabilities, women and child-headed households.
The intervention comes 12 years after Tshikondeni mine closed in 2014. Exxaro’s executive head of sustainability, Neo Monareng, said the company’s relationship with surrounding communities continued beyond mining operations.
Exxaro also reported an initial R31.9 million investment in a water project intended to serve four villages, alongside support for eight emerging farmers under its 2023–2027 Social and Labour Plan. Exxaro
The relief addresses household necessities, but the statement provides no timetable for repairing flood-damaged homes or completing the water project. Those details would help residents assess the longer-term recovery effort.
