Eskom has received approval to continue operating eight of its coal-fired power stations despite failing to meet the country’s pollution standards.
In December, the power utility applied for exemptions from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment, seeking relief from the minimum emission standards designed to limit harmful pollutants and protect surrounding communities.
Environment Minister Dion George explained that the decision to grant these exemptions was a careful balance between maintaining energy security and ensuring environmental protection.
However, the exemptions are not unconditional; each facility must adhere to strict measures to mitigate the effects of non-compliance.
