Eskom is assisting residents in Soweto with updating their prepaid meters, despite the official deadline passing on Sunday.
The utility is now focusing on helping customers who are illegally connected to the electricity grid.
Since the early hours of Monday, residents have been queuing at the Eskom service centre in Zola to get the necessary assistance.
Eskom has issued a warning that meters not upgraded by the end of this week will stop working.
Last week, a near stampede occurred when hundreds of people arrived at the Zola service centre to update their meters.
The Department of Electricity has intervened, highlighting that many illegal connections are the result of residents buying tokens from unregistered vendors.
These customers, who have issues with their meters, were instructed to visit Eskom for assistance on Monday.
Among those returning on Monday was Phumzile Dubazane, who admitted to bypassing her electricity meter.
“I moved into my late sister’s house, and it was her children who bypassed the electricity meter because they didn’t have money,” she explained.
Residents have reported being informed by Eskom officials that they would face a R6,000 fine for illegally connecting to the grid.
