The City of Ekurhuleni says it has finally addressed a long-standing billing crisis that recently cost the municipality more than R2 billion in lost revenue.
Earlier this year, investigations revealed a syndicate of over 1,600 households had been undercharged for electricity, contributing significantly to the shortfall.
The metro reports that its meter-reading systems are now operating near full capacity following tampering issues.
Speaking at a media briefing in Germiston, Ekurhuleni Mayor Doctor Xhakaza said substantial improvements had been made after significant investments in the city’s systems and the return of the automated meter reading function to its parent department.
He highlighted that meter reading accuracy has risen to 97 percent, up from 84 percent under ICT management, restoring confidence that residents are being billed correctly and fairly for the services they use.
