Mbombela – The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, has made sweeping arrests in connection with an alleged fraud scandal linked to the Mpumalanga Department of Education.
According to reports, multiple suspects were taken into custody following an investigation into irregular procurement processes and financial mismanagement within the department. Authorities allege that public funds intended for educational services were improperly allocated through irregular contracts.
The Hawks confirmed that the arrests form part of a broader anti-corruption drive targeting maladministration in provincial departments. The suspects are expected to appear in court on charges that may include fraud, corruption and contravention of public finance legislation.
Investigators indicated that the probe uncovered evidence suggesting coordinated activity involving officials and service providers. Law enforcement agencies have not ruled out further arrests as the investigation continues.
The development has raised renewed concern over governance oversight within the education sector, particularly as schools across the province rely heavily on provincial funding for infrastructure, learning materials and operational support.
Authorities reiterated that safeguarding public funds remains a priority, especially in sectors directly impacting learners and service delivery.
