Ajax Cape Town registered their first win of the 2016-17 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season, beating Platinum Stars 3-2 in Rustenburg
The Urban Warriors raced into a 3-0 lead within the opening 26 minutes with Bantu Mzwakali, Prince Nxumalo and an own goal from Steven Hoffman sending shock-waves through the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
Seeking a first win of the season, Ajax headed to the North West province low on confidence, but Mzwakali in particular rose to the occasion as Stanley Menzo registered his first win as head coach of the Cape club.
Having taken over the reins from Roger de Sa at the end of last month, the former Dutch international saw his side play to a draw at Free State Stars before a last minute goal from Maritzburg United condemned his side to another defeat, with victory just seemingly out of their reach
But, despite a second-half fightback by Dikwena, with goals from Vuyo Mere and Benson Shilongo, Ajax were able to hold on for all three points to subsequently move off the the foot of the table.
Over at Athlone Stadium, Cape Town City edged Maritzburg United by the same scoreline (3-2) in a five-goal thriller. Seeking a second win in succession in the Mother City, the Team of Choice took an early lead through Brian Onyango with the Kenyan finding the back of the net after six minutes.
Robyn Johannes received his marching orders in second-half stoppage-time, but Cape Town City managed to hold on as they move top of the PSL standings.
