PRETORIA – Eyewitness News understands that a dispute over a wall being constructed in an estate sparked the hostage drama in Moreleta Park which left four people dead.
Two police officers and three security officers were held hostage for about five hours yesterday.
The gunman is believed to have committed suicide.
Eyewitness News understands that a homeowner at the Meadows Estate was confronted about a wall he was building without the body corporate’s permission.
This allegedly led to an argument, and the gunman shooting two people from the estate.
One man says he heard the gunshots at about 2pm.
“We heard three shots first and then a fourth one after that and there was a commotion with the police.”
The police freed the five hostages at about 8pm last night.
Earlier, community members from at least six townhouse complexes were prevented from going home because the area had been on lockdown for most of the afternoon.
Police and security officials had also forced bystanders further away from the scene and earlier told people standing in their driveways to go inside for their own safety.
Investigations are underway to determine the motive behind a hostage drama.
