Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs was on Wednesday, July 2, found guilty of two charges relating to the transportation of individuals for prostitution.
The verdict follows a highly publicised trial in New York City, which involved allegations linked to his former partner Cassie Ventura, an ex-girlfriend identified as Jane Doe, and several escorts.
While Combs avoided convictions on the more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, the two guilty verdicts still carry significant weight.
Legal experts note that the maximum sentence for the offences is 10 years in prison, although it is considered unlikely that Combs will receive the maximum term due to his status as a first-time offender.
The sentencing date has not yet been set, leaving uncertainty around the exact outcome. Prosecutors have indicated they will pursue the full 20-year sentence, while Combs’ legal team is expected to argue for leniency.
Combs has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since his arrest in September last year. His attorney, Marc Agnifilo, has since filed a request for his release, pending sentencing.
According to Sky News, Combs responded to the jury’s verdict with a praying hands gesture, an apparent sign of gratitude for being cleared of the more severe charges.
