JOHANNESBURG – The Democratic Alliance (DA)’s Tania Campbell is the new executive mayor of the Ekurhuleni metro.

The African National Congress(ANC) has officially lost the Ekurhuleni municipality after the Democratic Alliance’s Tania Campbell was elected executive mayor of Ekurhuleni.

“The elections have been declared free and fair. The new Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni is Adlerwoman Tania Campbell,” said the City of Ekurhuleni in a statement.

She was up against the African National Congress (ANC)’s Mzwandile Masina. The municipality is among the five metro municipalities that were hung – meaning they will be governed through a coalition.

The DA’s Raymond Dhlamini took the oath of affirmation after being elected speaker. The ANC’s Dora Mlambo received 104 votes, while Dhlamini from the DA received 116 votes.

The newly-elected speaker received resounding applause as he took over the proceedings from the presiding officer.
