The Democratic Alliance in Johannesburg is calling for Transport MMC Kenny Kunene to be permanently removed from office, following his presence at the home of a murder suspect linked to the high-profile case of slain musician Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka.
Kunene confirmed that he was at the Sandton residence of Katiso “KT” Molefe when police arrested the suspect earlier this week. He claimed he was accompanying journalists who were there to gather material for a story intended for his online newspaper.
The DA believes Kunene’s actions have brought the City’s executive into disrepute. According to the party, the seriousness of the matter requires more than a temporary suspension, and they are demanding his unconditional removal from office pending the outcome of criminal and ethical investigations.
The Patriotic Alliance, Kunene’s political party, has placed him on special leave for 30 days while an internal investigation takes place. Party leader Gayton McKenzie announced the decision following Kunene’s media interviews, saying the suspension includes stepping away from his MMC duties and all political activity during the investigation period.
However, the DA has questioned the legitimacy of the Patriotic Alliance’s internal process and criticised McKenzie’s announcement, describing it as legally meaningless within the context of municipal governance. The party insists that only formal council processes can effect changes to the City’s executive, and says Kunene’s continued presence in office undermines public trust.
The controversy has reignited debate about the ethical standards expected of public officials, particularly those occupying high-profile leadership roles in the City of Johannesburg.
